Just ran into this problem installing a new fan in an older house. Read the posts above and decided to find the ceiling stud. I bypassed the junction box and went right into the ceiling stud with four long wood screws - two on each side. .
A cross strap is a common way to adapt the larger size down to the smaller size. Screws to 3 1/2 box and 2 3/4 fixture mounts to strap bracket. Some 2 3/4" boxes, particularly the metal styles, can allow a strap bracket to be mounted to the box and let the ends overhang the box so that screws on 3 1/2" centers can clear the outside of the box. Had a home inspector representing a buyer of home claim the junction boxes of these lights needs to be secure. Aren’t old houses great? My 1900 house had zero outlet boxes and zero light boxes. All the outlets were installed in the base moulding. On top of that, the switch boxes were designed for old push button switches and didn’t have holes that lined up with toggle switches, no matter what combination of mud rings and box extensions I could use.Unfortunately I only realized after the fact that the electrical junction boxes were only spray foamed where the romex enters the box.
