It has been an outside grill and dates back to 1998 and yet shows little signs of any serious deterioration. Try that with a current 3rd generation Summit! It is a formidable task to now have to restore various parts, find a sheet metal shop that can help me with some kind of fix for the firebox front, and then try to re-assemble all this stuff.

I know very little about sheet . I restored my Summit Gold D4 a few years ago that had many of the same issues as yours. I was able to get a warranty replacement lid and firebox from er free of charge which made it more reasonable. They are worth restoring if you can get a replacement firebox. You can search for my thread and see what it took. Firebox rust is the big enemy of those grills and expense of parts i.e. flavorizer bars. The ones on yours do not appear to be actual er (or even er imitation) parts. Odds are the PO found out how expensive they are and jury rigged something. But firebox rust is the downfall of Summits from the 1st generation onward.
Unlike the Genesis, whose firebox will last for decades if not abused, the Summit for some unknown reason uses STEEL in the lower portion of the firebox. As L Michaels has pointed out, the front part of this arrangement is particularly subject to rust-through which in time can make your firebox unsafe and unusable. Honestly look at the front of the fire box. This is a sore point for ALL Summit grills look for signs of it rusting out. If it is it may still be under warranty and if the seller is the original owner and if the er support gods don't let him down the way they let me down he can claim a new fire box for you. . A Summit Gold with an intact, unrusted firebox is a cool thing for sure. Rusting cabinets is definitely a continual problem. I have rehabbed a few newer Genesis 300 series grills all with that problem. My fix involved using high grade stainless replacement bottoms and backs made by a friend who owns a sheet metal shop. Just an FYI on the Summit in question here, the firebox on this generation is sheet steel with cast aluminum sides (think the way a er lid is put together). I restored one of these last year and after 12+ years outside in coastal RI the top lip of the steel firebox was crumbling.

Understand, you can nearly buy a whole new grill for what these cost to "fix". All Summits have a rust issue. Due to sheet metal fire box. This one is one many seek out due to stainless steel frame. But IIRC you will be well into about 0 just for the flavorizer bars. IMO they're nothing but trouble. Cook really well if/when they work though
