I've got an old ford bush hog, the sheet metal is rusted through around edges but gearbox and structure is in good shape, so I'd like to try to repair it. I'll be cutting out and replacing the 20ga sheet metal with patches. Then I have to weld the new 20ga patch material to angles and brackets that range from 1/8" to 3/16" thick. Mig welding sheet metal is not all that difficult, especially if you have the extra thickness of a lap joint. Not sure how your mig is set up but you need to use gas rather that flux core wire. Thiner wire works better and if you practice on some scrap material of the same thickness you shouldn't have any trouble. Which wire should I be running for mainly auto body sheet metal? Hi just wondering what the best practice / best tools would be to take down a weld on automotive sheet metal to get a seemless finish. I have been using a 5 inch angle grinder with a 120g flap disc but I don’t feel 100% consistent and am paranoid about taking it down to far or unevenly. 5 inch is potentially too wide and taking metal off the surrounding areas unnecessarily? What sheet metal thickness would you recomend? I was thinking 1/8" mild steel. Stainless would be better but I don't have the proper sheilding gas for stainless wire. .
